Coming soon: Post Bank of India

Moving a step closer to setting up a banking business, the Department of Posts has started scouting for a consultancy firm to prepare a road map for the proposed ‘Post Bank of India’ (PBI).
The Department has already carried out a feasibility study for setting up the Post Bank of India and has invited expression on interest from consultancy firms — domestic or foreign — to finalise the plans for the bank.
The DoP, according to an official document, “intends to obtain approval from the Cabinet and licence from RBI for creation of a full-fledged bank (PBI).”
The consultancy firm will provide inputs on issues like the organisational structure of PBI, requirement of seed money and its relationship with post offices.
The proposed PBI will provide banking services, including accepting of deposits from the public for the purpose of lending or investment.
The PBI will aim to “provide banking services with special focus on rural areas...ride on the Core Banking Solution which is proposed to be provided in all the post offices.”
PBI will also become an additional source of revenue generation for the DoP, besides creating a platform for financial inclusion programme of the government.
Currently, DoP operates seven small savings schemes through a network of 1.54 lakh post offices and collects huge amounts for both state and central governments. It has over 250 million account holders.
In addition to deposit schemes, the PBI will provide loans to general public and corporates like any regular bank.

  1. I had no idea that directives of superior authorities; Additional Director, PG,Lucknow’s directive to SSPOS and Post Master, Chowk, Lucknow, Sri Balasubramanian, DY. D.G.’s [Technolgy] to C.P.M.G.,U.P. are of no significance to the concerned PO/ Controlling PO. Chowk Post Master expressed his helplessness though he was apprised of these directives. I could know that India Post authorities can not be pursued through webbased support. As such citing all these communications I wrote to the Post Master, Shivaji Marg, Lucknow, with copies for n.a. to 1-The Post Master, Chowk, Lucknow, 2-The CPMG: UP, 3-The Secretary, Department of Post & 4- Mr. Balasubramanian K, Dy. D.G.[Technology], D.O.P. These representations ultimately forced the obstinate Post Master of Shivaji Marg, PO, to release payment, that too without physical verification, on 19th June, 2013. If, I had any inkling that Postal authorities can only be pursued through direct post, then I could have settled this stalemate situation long ago. The helpless family would not have suffered 19 days of traumatic wait for withdrawal of pension. India Post website do not accept feedback, competent authorities avoid to respond e-mail representations, web based registered complaints take inordinate time in processing, PG Portal registered complaints too take inordinate time for action.
In such situation a hapless commoner has no option, but to settle their complaints/ grievances through quick buck settlement. Where does transparency, accountability and commitment of fare and hassle free service to public goes then.
I have appraised the prevalent situation to almost all the conceivable authorities of postal department; from The Secretary Post, Department of Post to The Post Master Chowk, Lucknow. Silence of the Postal authorities show that this issue will be buried for ever as they have done to score of other complaints/grievances.
